Let Us Shoot Your Black Tie Wedding on B&W Film - Thx, Bye

I recently read Dina Litovsky’s “do’s & don’ts” of photography. I love her work and I agree with what she said about B&W being a “quick fix to an otherwise wonky photo.” so many photographers lean all their weight on that crutch. but I also see it as a welcomed break in the run-on sentence of a colorful gallery. some punctuation for your eyes. a period. a comma.

so let us play with extremes.

there’s an artist who lives in my town who recently redacted all the commas from the US Constitution and created a score for singers to perform using only their breath. what is this work asking of us? to pause? to reflect? to structure the ordering principle of a principle order out of context to gain new context? or is it simply a way for her to understand the spaces between and how they apply to her life?

all I know is, that if I heeded the advice of those whose work I adore, I would never learn for myself what feels too loud. so I overuse it to find its weakness. I misuse it to find its power. I don’t use it to make me wish I had.

I love how I can agree and disagree at the same time with someone I respect. proving, that the world is not all black and white.
